[OOC: THINGS YOU NEVER WANTED TO KNOW]
35 THINGS YOU NEVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT PHOENIX
1. Phoenix is not a morning person. He has, on occasion, thrown his alarm clock at the wall to make it stop ringing, but has since broken himself of the habit as buying a new alarm clock every week was beginning to take its toll on his wallet.
2. He does have a bit of a lazy streak and has waltzed into work up to two hours later than the “hours of operation” sign on his door states, but such are the perks of running your own practice (although, it wasn’t very pleasant dealing with the wrath of an angry, potential client that one time). Once he puts his mind to something, however, there’s no stopping him—he will pour his entire being into a case to achieve the desired results.
3. For the most part, he's a sound sleeper. In fact, he’s one of those people who could sleep through an earthquake, and has, on several occasions. Little things like lights turning on or off, however, have been known to send him bolting up in bed.
4. He’s most definitely a creature of impulse and wholly trusts in his instincts. While they may have lead him astray on occasion, the pros undoubtedly outweigh the cons and he’s found himself with little regret over the years.5. Though he tries to do what's best for everybody, there are times when he gets himself so worked up that he develops tunnel vision and can only focus on his intended goal, regardless of who might be affected on the sidelines. While it's beneficial in court, he's long since learned that it doesn't work out too well in every day life. His past attempts at controlling it have failed as it’s not something he’s consciously aware of while it’s happening, and he’s since given up trying. It isn’t likely that anyone would be able to stop him while in the midst of a tirade, either.
Addendum: I was never sure about this one. He does seem to get tunnel vision when he's on a roll, but I don't think he would disregard others' feelings because of it. He's too compassionate for that!
6. His favorite genre of entertainment is comedy by far, with additional leanings toward action and adventure. He tends to avoid "chick flicks" and tearjerkers on the basis of being horribly overdramatic and dull. In reality, they just make him cry, and he may or may not have a few guilty pleasures scattered amongst his DVD collection (Phenomenon, anyone? Ghost? …Titanic?).
7. When they were fourteen, Larry convinced Phoenix to take his dad's car out for a joyride, and Phoenix, panicked and having no idea what the hell he was doing, ended up hitting a parked car. Larry drove the rest of the way home in silence. It was Phoenix's first and last time behind the wheel.
8. He doesn’t take betrayal very well. It’s a good way to lose his respect and his friendship.
9. The only pet he’s ever owned was a goldfish named Charlie (no relation to the plant Charley) which, unfortunately, died after a week. He was the type of kid who had animals “follow him home” on a regular basis, but was never allowed to keep them. He has an aversion to large dogs and is convinced that Sigi wants to eat his soul.
10. He doesn’t talk about it a lot, but he really misses Mia. Even though Maya and Pearls occasionally channel her, it isn’t the same, and he’d much rather have all the Fey women present and accounted for. Often times, he swears he can feel her presence in the office, but brushes it off as his imagination (though not so much after he woke up last Sunday to see her sitting at his desk for a split second). He did harbor something resembling a schoolboy crush on her back in the day.
11. He loves Maya and Pearls like the little sisters he never had and will do anything to see them happy—even if it means spending money he doesn’t have to indulge Maya’s inexplicably large appetite.
12. There will always be a part of him that loves and believes in Dahlia.
13. Phoenix became a lawyer to save Edgeworth. Technically, he’s still trying.
14. He's becoming more and more aware of how much of a pushover he is when it comes to his friends. He's resolved to be more assertive, but so far, it isn't working out (see:
maraihi).
15. Zelos gave him a Snow Hare for good luck and he's taken to keeping it on his person at all times. Fiddling with it has become a nervous habit when he's anxious or tense.
16. He wears the tie-tack Edgeworth gave him for Christmas to every trial.
17. Even after all his protesting to the contrary (which he honestly believed at the time, and still does, to a degree), there’s a small part of him that’s scared his feelings for Edgeworth run deeper than friendship.
18. He started writing letters when he first read about the up and coming “Demon Prosecutor” when he was 20 and stopped when he passed his bar exam at age 24. He wrote at least one letter every two months, totaling more than twenty letters in all. He used to wonder if Edgeworth ever received them; now he’s certain he did. He used to wonder if Edgeworth ever read them; now he’s almost certain he didn’t.
19. When he first began his pursuit of Edgeworth, he collected news articles related to him and his trials and put them all together in a scrapbook. He still has the scrapbook—it’s sitting in his closet with his photo albums, although he hasn’t looked at it in over two years.
20. Speaking of photo albums, Phoenix is very fond of taking pictures. Whenever he’s out socially (which hasn’t been too often since graduating college), he always carries a disposable camera. There’s a section of wall in his apartment that’s solely devoted to photos of family and friends. The albums in his closet consist of one from his early childhood to teen years that his mom put together and two that he started in college; one is only half full and hasn’t been worked on for over a year, and it sits neglected in the box of photos meant to fill it. He keeps meaning to remedy that.
21. “I majored in art because I didn’t know what else to do,” he explained. “I always liked art in high school, so I thought… I thought it was something I might be good at, you know?” (from the Christmas thread) He wasn’t great, but he had a lot of fun and the classes turned out to be more interesting than he’d thought; it just didn’t suit him.
22. Growing up, Phoenix was very close to his mom and has inherited many of her traits, physically, emotionally, and habitually. While he does currently maintain a good relationship with his dad, the two have had their falling outs over the years, the most recent being over Phoenix’s choice in art as a college major. Phoenix didn’t hide the fact that he chose art simply because he didn’t know what else to do with his life (something else he took after his mom). His dad was pleased when Phoenix switched to law, simply because he could see Phoenix was passionate about it.
23. He’s keenly aware of how naïve he was in college, and while it’s often cringe-inducing, he looks back on those memories with an air of fondness.
24. He’s not so keenly aware of how naïve he remains today, although studying law and working under Mia has given him a much better perspective on life. He maintains a positive outlook with a healthy dose of cynicism.
25. Phoenix doesn’t give too much thought to his sexuality these days. He knows his preferences lean heavily toward women, but he’s come to terms with the fact that he’s at least a little bit curious.
26. Although he never says anything, he gets offended when people assume he can't afford things—even if they're right, most of the time. That being said, he's not above taking handouts, though he may protest at first.
27. Pity is another matter entirely. He has your pity, you lose his respect.
28. …He’s been guilty of pitying others on occasion.
29. He’s memorized the value menu of every fast food joint within his vicinity.
30. He feels extremely awkward when people get emotional around him, though he tries to say things that will make them feel better while still maintaining honesty. It’s typically a hit or miss situation.
31. Children are a mystery to Phoenix. He has a fondness for them, without a doubt, but when it comes to actually dealing with their wants and needs, he’s utterly clueless. If he ever becomes a father, it’s definitely a role he’ll have to grow into.
32. If he ever got tired of practicing law, he’d like to try his hand at being a detective.
33. His favorite beer is Miller Genuine Draft.
34. His favorite instrument is the piano and he took lessons for three years, but never progressed beyond basic textbook music… though he even messes that up sometimes. He simply doesn’t have the coordination.
35. Still paying off debt from student loans, the celebratory dinner at the Gatewater hotel, and Lotta’s camera.
------
Yes. 35. I could have added more, but I was getting tired. I srsly have a whole freaking history for him and it may never come out in-game; where am I going to put it if not here?
...I may add to this list in the future. >_>
